Wow! Only the second time in eight years that this one has visited the Polish Plantation. Was able to take a better picture this time. It’s a red-whiskered bulbul, though his red whiskers are only visible from specific angles in some light. They’re native to Southeast Asia, but a few are living wild and free in Los Angeles.
“I’m going to blow some bubbles to make myself happy again”
Informed that her blueberry muffin had fallen on the ground and was no longer edible, our daughter Neve makes a frownie face, then says, “I’m going to blow some bubbles to make myself happy again.”

Owl!
It only took me 7 years to get a photo of an owl at our house. This one is a western screech owl that lives in the palm tree above my car. I had to stake it out for 4 consecutive nights — after I first heard the hooing — and then got this photo. Still going to try to get a video of the owl emerging from the tree at sunset. Stay tuned!

Black-throated gray warbler
From my hammock this morning. A little out-of-focus.

“I love birds because they provide the perfect point of entry to the natural world.”
Red-whiskered bulbuls – a bird native to SE Asia that showed up in our walnut tree. Took me over 2 hours to figure out what they were.
